Bruno Fernandes Hat Trick Powers Manchester United to 5-2 Comeback Win Over Ipswich

Manchester United responded to last weekend’s humiliation against Hull City in emphatic fashion Sunday, overcoming an early deficit to beat promoted Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford behind a brilliant hat trick from captain Bruno Fernandes.

The victory was exactly the kind of response Michael Carrick’s side needed after a deserved Premier League-opening defeat that exposed a lack of intensity and aggression. United initially looked vulnerable again against Ipswich, but once Fernandes equalized, the hosts found another gear and eventually overwhelmed their opponents.

United began positively, with Marcus Rashford making an impressive first appearance at Old Trafford in 90 weeks. Matheus Cunha lifted an early effort over the crossbar after good work from Rashford, while Diogo Dalot forced Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen into a strong save with a curling effort.

Ipswich, however, repeatedly demonstrated that United’s defensive problems had not disappeared.

Julio Enciso had a golden opportunity on the counterattack, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied him and immediately launched a United counter that almost ended with Rashford getting a toe onto a dangerous cross.

Lammens continued to keep United alive, denying Daizen Maeda before eventually being beaten in the 29th minute.

Abdul Fatawu found far too much space against Luke Shaw and delivered a dangerous cross that Leif Davis expertly finished, giving Ipswich a dream 1-0 lead and once again raising questions about United’s options at left-back.

Fatawu soon got the better of Shaw again, but Lammens tipped Davis’ follow-up effort over the bar.

United finally found their response just before halftime. Marcelino Núñez’s mistake gave Cunha an opportunity, and the Brazilian quickly found Fernandes. The United captain made no mistake, unleashing a fierce strike in the 40th minute that caught Scherpen off guard.

The equalizer completely changed the mood inside Old Trafford. United came out after halftime with the aggression and intensity that had been missing against Hull, while Ipswich increasingly struggled to contain the hosts.

The breakthrough arrived in the 56th minute. Scherpen got a vital touch to Rashford’s cross, but the ball fell kindly for Harry Maguire, who brought it down before firing a low effort that went into the net off Jacob Greaves.

Ipswich immediately appealed for handball, prompting a VAR review. However, the goal stood after the incident was deemed accidental.

Things quickly deteriorated for Ipswich and Greaves. The centre-back brought down Cunha inside the penalty area, leaving referee Craig Pawson with little choice but to point to the spot.

Fernandes showed no concern about Scherpen’s attempts at mind games. The captain calmly converted the penalty in the 61st minute to put United ahead 3-1. Fernandes then completed his hat trick.

After Rashford had another effort saved, the ball eventually fell favorably for the United captain. Lively substitute Bryan Mbeumo saw his shot deflect into Fernandes’ path, and the skipper took a touch before finishing from close range in the 68th minute.

At 4-1, the match was effectively beyond Ipswich. Fernandes was playing with enormous confidence and even attempted to catch Scherpen from the halfway line. The goalkeeper was forced to scramble backward but was relieved to see the ball land on the roof of the net.

United continued searching for more as the Old Trafford crowd enjoyed a completely different performance from the one they witnessed at Hull.

Fernandes, Rashford and Cunha all threatened, while torrential rain made conditions increasingly difficult. Ipswich struggled to cope with United’s attacking movement.

With eight minutes remaining, Fernandes turned provider. The captain sent Mbeumo through, and the forward produced a looping finish that went in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 5-1.

Patrick Dorgu nearly added another, but Ipswich had the final say in stoppage time. Enciso won possession and calmly played the ball across for substitute Chuba Akpom, who finished to give the visitors a late consolation and set the final score at 5-2.

For Carrick and Manchester United, the result represented far more than three points. After the disappointment against Hull, United needed to demonstrate character, intensity and attacking quality. They did exactly that after falling behind, scoring five goals and turning what initially looked like another uncomfortable afternoon into a commanding victory.

Fernandes was unquestionably the centerpiece. His hat trick showcased his leadership and finishing ability, while his confidence after halftime helped drive United’s remarkable turnaround.

Rashford’s return to Old Trafford was another major positive, with his movement and attacking threat contributing to United’s improved performance.

The defensive concerns remain, particularly after Fatawu repeatedly exposed Shaw, but United showed they can respond to adversity.

After a disastrous start to the season, Manchester United finally produced the kind of spirited performance their supporters had been waiting to see.
