Cruise Ship Cuts World Voyage Short, Leaving 200 Passengers Stranded in Cambodia

Cruise Ship Leaves Passengers Stranded

A residential cruise ship that promised passengers a multiyear journey around the world has suspended operations in Cambodia, leaving more than 200 passengers facing uncertainty after being told to leave the vessel. The MV Odyssey, operated by Villa Vie Residences, halted its planned voyage in late October 2026 after the company cited soaring fuel costs that made continued operations financially unsustainable. The ship was docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, as of October 29, with its future departure and the resumption of its global voyage uncertain.

The disruption has affected passengers who paid substantial sums to live aboard the ship while traveling internationally. Some residents had sold homes or made major life changes to embrace residential cruising, a concept that combines long term living at sea with travel around the world.

Rising Fuel Costs Force Cruise Ship to Stop

Villa Vie Residences attributed the suspension to a sharp increase in fuel expenses linked to the war involving Iran and disruptions affecting fuel supplies. The company said fuel costs per cabin, which had historically averaged approximately $1,800 per month, had risen to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. The operator reportedly attempted to reduce expenses by slowing the ship’s itinerary and spending more time in port. However, those measures were not enough to prevent mounting financial losses. The company said passing the full increase in fuel expenses on to residents was not a realistic solution, forcing it to reconsider its operations and financial future.

Passengers Given Hours to Leave the Ship

The sudden suspension left passengers scrambling to find accommodations and arrange travel in Cambodia. Passengers reportedly received approximately seven hours’ notice to disembark on Tuesday, October 27. Some residents expressed frustration over the short notice and the uncertainty surrounding their living arrangements. After leaving the ship, passengers faced the challenge of finding temporary accommodations while determining their next steps. The company said it was evaluating options to restructure its business and address the disruption. However, the immediate impact on passengers was significant, particularly for those who expected the vessel to remain their home for years.

A Cruise Ship Marketed as a Floating Home

The MV Odyssey was designed for residential cruising rather than conventional vacation travel. Villa Vie Residences marketed the vessel as a floating community where customers could purchase cabins and travel between international destinations while living aboard. The ship departed Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 for a planned three-and-a-half-year journey that included destinations across all seven continents. Some residents invested six figures in their cabins. One passenger reportedly paid $120,000 for a cabin in installments, in addition to monthly maintenance fees. The arrangement offered the possibility of living aboard the vessel for up to 15 years. For residents who treated the ship as their primary home, the suspension represented more than a canceled vacation. It disrupted their living arrangements and raised questions about their investments and the future of residential cruising.

Passengers Raise Concerns About Earlier Problems

Some residents had reported operational difficulties before the suspension, including itinerary changes, unreliable internet service and concerns about food quality. Passengers also described being asked to contribute additional money toward fuel and other expenses. These accounts raised concerns about the financial pressures facing the residential cruise business. However, passenger complaints about service and management are individual accounts, not independently established findings about the company’s financial condition. The operator’s stated reason for suspending the voyage was the sharp increase in fuel expenses and its inability to continue absorbing the resulting losses.

What Happens to the MV Odyssey Next?

As of October 29, 2026, the ship remained docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. A local official reportedly said the vessel was expected to refuel and depart on October 31, although its future itinerary remained uncertain. Villa Vie Residences was reportedly considering restructuring and recapitalization options over the following 60 days. Those efforts could determine whether the company can resume operations, secure additional financial backing or develop another solution for affected residents. The long term outcome remained unresolved as of October 29. Passengers were left facing questions about when they might return to the vessel, whether the global voyage would resume and what would happen to the money they had invested in their cabins.
