Top Gun Actor Stabbed to Death
Veteran actor James Handy, whose career spanned nearly five decades in film and television and included a memorable appearance in the blockbuster film “Top Gun: Maverick,” was killed Wednesday after authorities say he was stabbed at a residence in the Los Angeles area. He was 81 years old.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s longtime girlfriend. Authorities allege that Gledhill fatally stabbed the actor during an incident at the home they all shared in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles. The shocking killing has sent ripples through Hollywood, where Handy was known as a respected character actor with an extensive list of screen credits.
Authorities Respond to Disturbing 911 Call
According to investigators, police were dispatched to the residence Wednesday morning after receiving a troubling emergency call. Authorities said the caller made statements indicating a homicide had occurred at the property.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Handy suffering from a stab wound. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to a nearby hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Police said the suspect remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. Investigators have not publicly disclosed what may have led to the fatal confrontation, and officials continue to examine evidence and interview witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.
Murder Charge Filed
Authorities arrested Gledhill on suspicion of murder and booked him into custody. Court and jail records indicate his bail was set at $2 million.
Investigators have not released details regarding a possible motive, and officials have cautioned that the investigation remains active. Detectives are working to determine the sequence of events that preceded the stabbing and whether there were any prior incidents at the residence that could provide insight into the case. The Los Angeles Police Department has not announced when the suspect is expected to make his first court appearance.
