More Dating Apps Turn To A.I. To Fight ‘Swipe Fatigue’

Dating apps are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence as users grow tired of endlessly swiping through profiles, with major platforms including Grindr and Tinder betting that smarter technology can make finding a connection faster and more meaningful.

For years, the formula seemed simple: create a profile, swipe through potential matches, connect with someone who also swiped right and start a conversation. But the novelty of online dating has increasingly given way to frustration, repetition and what the industry now calls “swipe fatigue.”

Dating companies are responding by trying to change the experience itself. Instead of asking users to manually sort through seemingly endless profiles, companies are developing artificial intelligence systems that can analyze preferences, behavior and conversations to surface people who may be better suited to one another.

Grindr is among the most aggressive companies making that shift. The LGBTQ+ dating platform has described itself as becoming an “AI-first” company and is incorporating its proprietary gAI technology throughout the app.

According to Grindr’s 2026 product roadmap, the company wants artificial intelligence to help users discover people who fit their preferences, improve search, prioritize conversations and identify potentially stronger connections. The company says the objective is to reduce “noise” and help users spend less time searching and more time connecting.

One of the platform’s features, called “More of Your Type,” uses artificial intelligence to recommend profiles based on the look, vibe and characteristics of people a user has already shown interest in. Another feature, Wingman, allows users to describe what they are looking for so the system can surface profiles that fit those preferences.

Grindr is also testing AI-powered tools that can prioritize conversations and provide compatibility signals. Its premium EDGE experience is designed to use AI throughout the dating process, from discovery to messaging and reconnecting with previous matches.

The company has been developing AI dating technology for several years. Grindr said in 2024 that it had been researching AI features for more than a year and saw the technology as a potential way to help users develop deeper and more meaningful connections.

Tinder is taking a similar approach. The dating platform has been testing an AI-powered feature called Chemistry that is designed to reduce the amount of traditional swiping by providing more personalized recommendations.

The broader industry shift reflects a growing realization among dating companies that simply giving users more profiles may not necessarily create better dating experiences.

The problem is not necessarily a lack of choices. It may be too many choices.

When users are presented with an almost endless supply of potential matches, dating can begin to feel less like meeting people and more like scrolling through an online catalog. Profiles can blur together, conversations can become repetitive and users can spend significant amounts of time interacting with the apps without actually meeting anyone.

That has created a difficult business problem for dating companies. Their platforms traditionally benefited from keeping users engaged, but users increasingly say they want a more efficient path toward an actual relationship or meaningful connection.

Recent industry reporting has described the dating-app market as facing declining engagement and user frustration, with companies experimenting with everything from AI matchmaking to reducing or eliminating traditional swiping.

The push toward AI also comes as dating companies try to figure out what users actually want from artificial intelligence.

Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, Hinge and other dating services, surveyed approximately 1,000 U.S. singles between the ages of 18 and 39 about AI and dating. The company found that many respondents were comfortable using AI as a tool to improve their dating experiences, but that did not mean they wanted AI to replace human relationships.

According to the survey, 74% of respondents said they use ChatGPT, while roughly 64% said AI can help with aspects of dating such as creating stronger profiles, starting conversations and keeping conversations going. At the same time, 47% said they viewed AI negatively when it came to romantic relationships.

That distinction could become one of the biggest challenges for dating apps.

People may be willing to let artificial intelligence help them find potential matches, write a better opening message or sort through conversations. They may be considerably less comfortable with the idea of allowing an algorithm to determine who they should date or having an AI effectively participate in their romantic conversations.

There is also the question of authenticity.

Dating is inherently personal, and artificial intelligence introduces another layer between two people who are supposed to be getting to know each other. If an AI writes the opening message, recommends what to say next and summarizes a conversation, users may eventually wonder how much of the interaction actually reflects the person on the other side of the screen.

Privacy is another major concern. Dating apps already collect highly sensitive information about users, including photographs, location information, dating preferences, messages and behavioral patterns. Expanding AI systems means companies may have even more ways to analyze that information.

Grindr says it is also using AI technology to help identify bad actors, reduce spam and support enforcement of its community standards. The company says it is developing and training models internally as part of those efforts.

For the dating industry, however, the biggest question remains whether AI can actually solve the problem users are experiencing.

Artificial intelligence can make searching more efficient. It can analyze enormous amounts of information faster than a human can. It can identify patterns in user behavior and potentially eliminate some of the tedious work involved in sorting through hundreds of profiles.

But chemistry is not a spreadsheet.

A person can appear to be an ideal match based on interests, preferences and personality traits and still have no spark when the two people meet in real life. Conversely, someone who looks completely incompatible on paper can turn out to be an unexpectedly great match.

That uncertainty is precisely what makes dating human.

The current AI push therefore represents something bigger than a technological upgrade. Dating companies are effectively trying to redesign the fundamental experience of online dating after years of relying on the same profile, swipe, match and message formula.

Some companies are even experimenting with removing swiping altogether. Newer dating platforms are using AI interviews and matchmaking systems to learn about users before recommending potential partners, effectively shifting the process from browsing profiles to answering questions and receiving curated matches.

Whether that approach works remains an open question.

For now, the dating industry is betting that people do not necessarily want more people to choose from. They want better choices.

Artificial intelligence could make that process faster and potentially less exhausting. But if dating apps want users to believe that AI can genuinely improve their love lives, they will have to prove that the technology is doing more than simply keeping people inside the apps.

The ultimate test will not be how many profiles an algorithm can recommend.

It will be whether those recommendations actually help two people put down their phones, meet in the real world and build something that no algorithm can manufacture.
