Three suspects, an adult woman and two juveniles, were arrested the following day after surveillance video captured the theft at Brand Original, a luxury boutique on Collins Avenue, according to a WPLG Local 10 News report. The adult suspect, identified as Mo’Nique Williams, is facing a felony grand theft charge, while two juveniles were taken to a juvenile assessment center.
Police say all three eventually confessed to participating in the theft and identified themselves in surveillance footage. The case is the latest high dollar property crime involving luxury merchandise in Sunny Isles Beach, an affluent oceanfront community where handbags, watches, jewelry and exotic vehicles can carry price tags exceeding what many Americans spend on a car. According to Local 10, surveillance footage from inside Brand Original captured a suspect approaching merchandise and grabbing the Hermès Birkin directly from a display before fleeing. The handbag was valued at approximately $16,000. The speed of the alleged theft underscores one of the vulnerabilities facing high end retailers: a relatively small object sitting on a shelf can represent tens of thousands of dollars in inventory and can disappear in seconds.
