Body of Missing 18-Year-Old Found in Mississippi After Days Long Search

Missing Teen Found Dead

A search that gripped Mississippi’s Gulf Coast over the holiday weekend ended in heartbreak after authorities recovered the body of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells near Horn Island, just days after he was reported missing.

The Jackson County Coroner’s Office said the body was found Sunday morning near the northwest side of Horn Island. Although officials are awaiting final DNA confirmation from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, Wells’ family has confirmed that the body is believed to be his.

Wells, a recent graduate of Ocean Springs High School, disappeared on July 4 while spending the day on Horn Island with a group of friends. According to investigators, the group traveled to the barrier island by boat, but Wells did not return with them later that day. His family reported him missing, launching a large-scale search involving multiple agencies.

Search crews from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and volunteer organizations searched the island and surrounding waters using boats, aircraft, drones, and ground teams.

The body was discovered by a park ranger in the water near the island Sunday morning. Authorities transported the remains to the state medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Investigators have not announced an official cause of death, but they have said there are no immediate signs pointing to foul play. The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance.

The news has devastated family members, friends, classmates, and the Ocean Springs community. Wells had recently graduated from high school and was preparing to begin the next chapter of his life, including plans to continue his football career at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Following the discovery, Wells’ mother shared an emotional message thanking the countless first responders, volunteers, and community members who helped search for her son. She described Nolan as a compassionate young man who brought joy to those around him and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support her family has received.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the events leading up to Wells’ disappearance and are asking anyone with information about his final hours on Horn Island to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. The results of the medical examiner’s investigation are expected to provide additional answers in the coming weeks.
