Body of Missing Nine Year Old Found
The remains of 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard, a California girl reported missing in October, were discovered in a remote area of Wayne County, Utah. Law enforcement confirmed that the body, found on December 6, 2025, was identified through DNA testing on December 22. Melodee had been missing for over two months during a road trip with her mother.
Circumstances of Disappearance
Melodee was last seen alive on October 9, 2025, near the Colorado-Utah border with her mother, 40-year-old Ashlee Buzzard. Surveillance footage captured the pair in a rental vehicle. Melodee’s absence was reported to authorities by school officials after she missed multiple days of classes and her mother offered no explanation.
Investigation Details
Authorities reported that Melodee died from gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators linked shell casings at the discovery site to a casing previously recovered from the Buzzard family residence. Additional ammunition was found in the rented vehicle, and familial DNA confirmed the identity of the victim.
Mother Taken Into Custody
On December 23, 2025, Ashlee Buzzard was arrested at her home in Vandenberg Village, California. She faces charges of first-degree murder and is being held without bail. Law enforcement has not yet recovered the murder weapon or established a motive.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The case, which drew national attention, is ongoing. Prosecutors and law enforcement continue to review evidence as preparations are made for upcoming legal proceedings. Further updates are expected from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the district attorney.
