Britney Spears DUI Footage Reveals Heated Exchange With Police Before Arrest
Newly released police footage and investigation records are shedding light on the March DUI arrest of pop superstar Britney Spears, revealing a chaotic roadside encounter in which the singer argued with officers, denied being intoxicated, and allegedly displayed erratic behavior during a traffic stop on a California highway.
According to records reviewed by CBS News, Spears was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol after officers observed her speeding and drifting between lanes on U.S. 101 in March. Police reports state that Spears took approximately 15 seconds to respond after officers initiated the stop. When she eventually rolled down her window, the responding officer reported detecting “the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage” coming from inside the vehicle.
What followed, according to dashboard camera footage and the police report, was a tense and unusual roadside exchange that lasted roughly 10 minutes before Spears exited the car.
“I’m Totally Fine”
Footage from the stop reportedly shows Spears repeatedly resisting officers’ requests to step out of the vehicle. At one point, the singer told officers she did not feel safe exiting on the side of the highway because of passing traffic. Even after officers offered to move her to a safer location nearby, Spears allegedly continued refusing commands and instead suggested the officers follow her home.
“I’ll make you food or lasagna, whatever you want. I have a pool,” Spears reportedly told officers during the encounter.
The police report states Spears insisted multiple times that she was capable of driving safely and was “totally fine.” But officers described a dramatically different scene. According to the arrest report, Spears appeared visibly unsteady once she exited the vehicle and displayed “rapid and slurred” speech. The responding officer also noted what he described as “dramatic mood swings” throughout the stop and claimed Spears intermittently spoke using a British accent during portions of the interaction. Spears allegedly admitted she had consumed a mimosa roughly six hours earlier but denied feeling intoxicated.
“I could probably drink four bottles of wine and take care of you. I’m an angel,” Spears allegedly told police, according to the report.
The singer also reportedly informed officers she had taken Lamictal, a medication commonly prescribed to treat bipolar disorder.
Alcohol, Medication, and Drug Questions
During a subsequent search of Spears’ vehicle, officers reportedly found a wine glass in the front cupholder along with a bottle of Adderall that police said was not prescribed to her. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence involving both alcohol and drugs. Breathalyzer tests administered approximately one hour after the stop reportedly showed blood alcohol concentrations of 0.06% and 0.05% both below California’s legal limit of 0.08% for DUI charges. However, officers proceeded with the investigation due to alleged signs of impairment and the possibility of drug involvement. Authorities also drew blood to test for narcotics or controlled substances, though those results were not included in the records obtained by CBS News. Earlier this month, Spears ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received 12 months probation, avoiding jail time.
Another Public Crisis for Britney Spears
The incident marks another highly public personal struggle for Spears, whose life has remained under intense public scrutiny for nearly two decades. Since the collapse of her controversial conservatorship in 2021, Spears has repeatedly made headlines for erratic social media behavior, public incidents, and growing concern among fans over her mental health and support system.
Following the arrest, a representative for Spears described the incident as “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable.” CBS Los Angeles also reported that Spears voluntarily checked herself into rehab in April following the arrest. The renewed spotlight on Spears has reignited debate over celebrity mental health, addiction, and the entertainment industry’s long history of turning public breakdowns into spectacle.
For many fans, the footage is less about scandal and more about watching a deeply troubled global icon continue struggling in full public view. For critics, however, the incident raises serious questions about accountability, impaired driving, and whether Spears is receiving the long term support she needs after years of instability, legal battles, and public trauma. Either way, the release of the footage has once again thrust one of pop culture’s most recognizable figures back into the center of a national conversation she has spent much of her adult life trying and often failing to escape.
