Boeing 737 Max Inspections
The FAA is ordering inspections of hundreds of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft after structural cracking was discovered on older 737 models, raising fresh concerns about the long term durability of one of the world’s most widely used commercial airplanes.
The Federal Aviation Administration is requiring airlines to inspect hundreds of Boeing 737 MAX jets for possible cracks in a structural component near the forward service door. The order covers an estimated 471 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft registered in the United States. The affected models include the 737 MAX 8, MAX 9 and MAX 8 200. The inspections are scheduled to begin September 10, 2026. The FAA action comes after cracks were identified in a structural reinforcement known as a bear strap on certain older Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft. The component helps reinforce the aircraft’s fuselage around the forward galley door. While the cracks have been found on older 737 aircraft, the FAA is concerned because the 737 MAX uses a similar design and manufacturing process in the area. That does not mean hundreds of MAX aircraft have been found to have cracks. So far, the FAA and Boeing have not reported finding the same cracking problem on 737 MAX aircraft. Instead, regulators are taking a precautionary approach and requiring inspections before a similar problem could potentially develop or go undetected.
Why the Cracks Matter
An airplane’s fuselage is subjected to enormous amounts of stress throughout its operating life. Every flight involves repeated cycles of pressurization and depressurization. Over thousands of flights, that repeated stress can contribute to fatigue in aircraft structures. The area around a door is particularly important because cutting an opening into the fuselage changes how forces are distributed through the aircraft’s structure. Reinforcement components help compensate for that change and maintain the strength of the fuselage. If cracks develop in a structural component and continue to grow without being detected, they could eventually affect the aircraft’s ability to withstand required loads. That is why the FAA is requiring airlines to inspect the affected area and make repairs if cracking is discovered.
Boeing Has Been Investigating the Issue
Boeing has been aware of the cracking issue involving older 737 aircraft and has worked with airlines and regulators on inspections and repairs. The company has also examined the manufacturing and engineering factors that could contribute to the problem. The latest FAA directive expands the regulatory response by specifically requiring inspections of certain 737 MAX aircraft. The agency has not ordered the planes to be grounded simply because they are included in the inspection program. Instead, airlines will inspect the aircraft according to the requirements laid out by the FAA. If a crack is discovered, the aircraft will need to be repaired before returning to service.
Another Safety Issue for Boeing
The inspection order is significant because it comes during a period when Boeing is already facing extraordinary scrutiny over aircraft safety, manufacturing quality and production oversight. The 737 MAX has been at the center of some of the most serious aviation safety controversies in recent years. Two fatal crashes involving 737 MAX aircraft in 2018 and 2019 resulted in the deaths of 346 people and led to a worldwide grounding of the aircraft. The MAX eventually returned to commercial service after regulators required changes to the aircraft and Boeing’s procedures. But the company’s problems did not end there. In January 2024, an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 lost a door plug shortly after takeoff. The incident triggered another major investigation into Boeing’s manufacturing and quality control processes. Investigators determined that several bolts needed to secure the door plug were missing when the aircraft left Boeing’s factory. The incident once again placed Boeing under intense regulatory and public scrutiny.
Passengers Should Not Panic
For passengers, the latest FAA order does not mean that 471 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft have been declared unsafe. The inspections are preventive. The FAA is essentially saying that because a structural problem has been identified on related aircraft, regulators want to make sure the same issue is not developing on the MAX. That distinction is important. Commercial aircraft undergo extensive inspections throughout their operating lives. Mandatory inspection directives are one of the primary tools regulators use to identify potential problems before they become serious safety threats. If inspectors find cracking, the aircraft will be repaired before it can continue operating under the applicable requirements. Airlines are also expected to incorporate the inspections into their maintenance schedules, limiting the potential for widespread disruptions.
Boeing Faces Another Test of Confidence
The latest directive may not result in a major disruption for travelers, but it adds another challenge for Boeing as the company attempts to rebuild confidence in its aircraft and manufacturing operations. The 737 MAX remains one of Boeing’s most important products and is flown by airlines around the world. That makes even relatively small structural concerns significant. The FAA’s decision to require inspections before the problem has been confirmed on the MAX also illustrates how aggressively regulators are approaching potential safety issues involving Boeing aircraft. For Boeing, the message is clear: potential problems are no longer something regulators are willing to wait on. Hundreds of 737 MAX aircraft will now be examined for signs of structural cracking, and if any problems are found, repairs will be required. For passengers, the immediate risk appears limited because the FAA has not ordered a grounding. But for Boeing, the latest inspection requirement represents another reminder that every part of its manufacturing and engineering process is under a microscope.
