L.A. District Attorney Addresses Arrest of Nick Reiner in Rob Reiner Murder Investigation

Prosecutors to Charge Nick Reiner With Two Counts of Murder in Killing of Rob Reiner and His Wife

Los Angeles County prosecutors say they will charge Nick Reiner, the son of acclaimed filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents, a case that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond. At a Tuesday news conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, joined by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, announced that prosecutors intend to file the charges later in the day. The case includes special circumstances alleging multiple murders and a separate allegation that a knife was used as the deadly weapon.

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday in their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Investigators believe both died from stab wounds, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested several hours after the bodies were discovered and is being held without bail.

Charges and Court Status

Prosecutors said Nick Reiner is expected to be formally charged with:

  • Two counts of first-degree murder

  • Special circumstances for multiple murders

  • A special allegation of using a deadly weapon, a knife

Nick Reiner was expected to make an initial court appearance Tuesday, but his attorney, Alan Jackson, said he was not transported from jail for medical reasons. Jackson told reporters he did not know the nature of the medical issue and said Reiner is not expected to appear in court before Wednesday. Jackson declined to comment further on the case. Nick Reiner has not entered a plea. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the killings.

A Family With a Public Legacy

Rob Reiner was an Emmy-winning actor on All in the Family before becoming one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, with films including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Misery, and A Few Good Men. He was also a prominent liberal activist for decades. Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer, film producer, and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. The couple had been married for 36 years. The killings have drawn an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment and political worlds.

“I loved Rob,” actor Kathy Bates said in a statement. “He was brilliant and kind, a man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist. He also fought courageously for his political beliefs. He changed the course of my life. Michele was a gifted photographer.”

Former President Bill Clinton also issued a statement, saying, “Hillary and I are heartbroken by the tragic deaths of our friends Rob and Michele Reiner. They inspired and uplifted millions through their work in film and television.”

Nick Reiner’s Background

Nick Reiner has spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction, describing years of cycling through treatment facilities and periods of homelessness during his teens and early adulthood. Those struggles informed the 2016 film Being Charlie, which Nick Reiner co-wrote and Rob Reiner directed. While not autobiographical, the film explored the fractured relationship between an addicted son and his famous father.

“It forced us to understand ourselves better than we had,” Rob Reiner told the Associated Press in 2016. “I told Nick while we were making it, I said, ‘You know it doesn’t matter, whatever happens to this thing, we won already.’”

Just three months ago, Nick Reiner was photographed alongside his parents and siblings at the premiere of his father’s film Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues.

An Investigation Still Unfolding

Police have released few details about the investigation, and representatives for the Reiner family did not respond to requests for comment. Prosecutors emphasized that the case remains active and that further information will be presented in court. The deaths are especially jarring given the family’s long association with comedy, creativity, and public advocacy. Rob Reiner was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, who died in 2020 at age 98. As the case moves into the courts, it stands as a grim reminder that even families defined by public warmth and cultural impact are not immune to profound and private tragedy.
