Naked DoorDash Driver Delivers Dinner in Houston, Promptly Gets Fired After Ring Camera Captures Everything
There are bad DoorDash deliveries. There are missing fries, cold burgers, drinks left in front of screen doors and orders mysteriously deposited three houses down. Then there is what happened to Kiante Matlock in Houston.
A DoorDash driver delivering food to Matlock’s northeast Houston home allegedly decided clothing, shoes and apparently every other traditional component of the delivery driver uniform were optional, arriving at the customer’s front door completely naked. Unfortunately for the driver, the house had a Ring camera, transforming what could have been an unbelievable story into an unbelievable story with video evidence.
The incident happened August 24 near Homestead Road, according to FOX 26 Houston Matlock was inside playing a video game while his daughter was home when she noticed a notification on his phone indicating his DoorDash order had arrived. Matlock checked the notification and then looked at his Ring camera. That was when dinner took a dramatic turn.
The Food Arrived. The Driver’s Clothes Did Not.
Matlock told FOX 26 that the delivery driver had dropped off his order while completely naked. According to his account and the station’s reporting, the man wasn’t simply shirtless or missing his pants. He had arrived without clothes, shoes or socks. By the time Matlock made it to his front door, the driver was already gone. That probably prevented what would have been an exceptionally awkward customer service interaction.
Matlock said his initial reaction was disbelief. More seriously, he was concerned about what could have happened if his daughter or another child had answered the door instead. What initially sounds like an absurd viral video story becomes considerably less funny when an apparently naked stranger has been sent through an app to somebody’s private residence where children may be present. Matlock told the station that customers should consider using security cameras and, when possible, picking up their own food.
And No, He Did Not Eat the Food
There is also the question everybody watching the story inevitably wants answered. Did he still eat it? Absolutely not. Matlock said he did not keep the delivered food and instead ate leftovers. DoorDash subsequently refunded the order. Considering the circumstances surrounding the delivery, this may be one of the least controversial refund decisions in the history of food delivery. Some meals simply cannot be emotionally recovered.
DoorDash Was Not Amused
DoorDash responded quickly after learning about the incident and made clear that naked delivery is not an experimental new service tier. The company called what Matlock experienced “abhorrent” and described the driver’s behavior as vulgar and completely unacceptable. DoorDash said the man was permanently removed from the platform as soon as the company became aware of the incident and emphasized that it does not tolerate sexual harassment or misconduct.
The company also said it had contacted Matlock directly to offer support and was prepared to assist law enforcement with any investigation. DoorDash says complaints made through its app are reviewed by its Trust & Safety team. Customers who encounter threatening, inappropriate or otherwise concerning behavior are encouraged to report it through the platform and contact local law enforcement when necessary. If there is an immediate threat, customers should call 911. In other words, DoorDash’s official dress code may contain some flexibility, but “literally nothing” appears to have crossed the line.
Houston Police Say the Ring Video Could Matter
The Houston Police Department told FOX 26 that anyone experiencing a similar incident should make a police report and preserve available evidence, particularly Ring, doorbell or surveillance camera footage.
Police did not announce charges against the driver in FOX 26’s report, and it would be premature to declare that the conduct automatically constitutes indecent exposure. Under Texas law, indecent exposure involves exposing the anus or genitals with an intent to arouse or gratify sexual desire while being reckless about whether another person is present who could be offended or alarmed. Whether the Houston incident meets those elements would depend on evidence and an investigation.
That distinction matters. Being naked in an extraordinarily inappropriate place and committing the specific criminal offense of indecent exposure are not necessarily legally identical. HPD told FOX 26 there could potentially be criminal charges depending on the circumstances, but officers would first need a report and an investigation.
The Gig Economy Has Officially Seen Everything
There is an inherently ridiculous element to the story because modern life has somehow produced a situation in which a person can tap a screen, order dinner and receive a smartphone notification moments before discovering that a completely naked stranger has been algorithmically dispatched to his front porch. But underneath the comedy is a legitimate safety problem.
Delivery platforms give independent drivers access to customers’ homes and addresses. Customers frequently order at night. Children answer doors. People living alone reasonably expect that the stranger arriving at their home through a major delivery platform will observe some extremely basic behavioral standards, beginning, presumably, with wearing pants.
Matlock’s Ring camera provided exactly the kind of independent evidence police recommend preserving in unusual encounters involving delivery workers or other strangers at a residence. Fortunately, nobody was reported physically injured. The driver was permanently removed from DoorDash, Matlock got his money back and the uneaten delivery was replaced by the safest culinary option available under the circumstances: leftovers. And somewhere in Houston, one former DoorDash driver has learned an important lesson about the modern surveillance economy. If you’re going to make a terrible decision on somebody else’s front porch, there is an excellent chance the doorbell is recording.
