Alleged Antisemitic Attack in Surfside
A newly released video is providing a closer look at an alleged antisemitic attack in Surfside that resulted in criminal charges against a 35 year old man. Jorden Stephen Perozo is facing charges of battery with prejudice and harassment or intimidation based on religious or ethnic heritage, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police Say Confrontation Escalated
The incident reportedly happened Aug. 16 near the 9500 block of Harding Avenue in Surfside. According to the affidavit, a man visiting South Florida from New York was walking with his wife when Perozo allegedly approached them on an electric scooter.
Investigators said the encounter became confrontational after Perozo allegedly directed profanity and comments targeting the Jewish community toward the couple.
According to the arrest affidavit, Perozo allegedly punched the man in the side of his head with a closed fist. The victim reportedly attempted to walk away, but investigators allege Perozo continued the confrontation and made additional threats.
Alleged Religious and Ethnic Remarks
The affidavit alleges Perozo threatened the victim with death while continuing to make comments involving the Jewish community, Israel and Palestine. The victim’s wife recorded part of the confrontation on her cellphone. Investigators obtained the recording and are using it as evidence in the case. The allegations are central to the charges involving prejudice and harassment or intimidation based on religious or ethnic heritage.
Arrest at Surfside Restaurant
Police later located Perozo at his workplace at a Flanigan’s restaurant on Harding Avenue, according to authorities. He was arrested without incident. A judge subsequently found probable cause in the case and set Perozo’s bond at $6,000.
Previous Criminal Case
Perozo has also faced criminal charges in a separate case. Miami Beach police previously accused him of damaging a large inflatable soccer ball displayed in connection with the FIFA World Cup. That case resulted in a criminal mischief charge. The previous case is separate from the Surfside allegations.
Case Remains Pending
The alleged attack has drawn attention in Surfside, a community with a significant Jewish population. Local religious leaders have condemned the reported conduct while emphasizing that the alleged actions of one individual do not represent the broader community.
The allegations contained in the arrest affidavit have not been proven in court. Perozo is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty. The newly released video could become important evidence as the criminal case moves forward and prosecutors pursue the charges against him.
