Ryanair Passenger Window Incident
A Ryanair passenger is recounting the terrifying moments when he was partially pulled through a shattered airplane window during a flight from Greece to Germany, describing an ordeal that left him injured and emotionally shaken.
Ljubiša Karović, 61, was traveling on Ryanair Flight FR1879 from Thessaloniki to Memmingen on July 10 when an apparent engine malfunction sent debris into the side of the Boeing 737, shattering the window next to his seat. The damage caused a rapid decompression, and Karović said the force of the escaping air pulled him toward the opening before fellow passengers intervened.
Karović recalled hearing a loud bang moments after takeoff before feeling himself being dragged toward the broken window. According to his account, he was partially outside the aircraft when his wife grabbed his legs and other passengers rushed to help pull him back inside. He later said he believes their quick actions saved his life.
The aircraft’s pilots declared an emergency and returned safely to Thessaloniki, where emergency crews were waiting on the ground. Karović was treated for burns, bruises and neck injuries before being taken to a hospital. Although he has since been released, he says the psychological effects of the incident remain, describing recurring panic and difficulty processing what happened.
The incident has drawn international attention because of its rarity. Commercial aircraft are designed with multiple safety systems, but investigators believe debris from the engine struck the fuselage and damaged the window, creating the decompression that led to the emergency.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Authorities are examining what caused the engine failure and whether maintenance, mechanical issues or other factors contributed to the event. Investigators have not reached any final conclusions.
Ryanair has said the flight crew responded appropriately by following emergency procedures and safely returning the aircraft to the departure airport. The airline arranged an alternate aircraft to transport passengers to their destination after the emergency landing.
Karović has expressed frustration with the airline’s response following the incident and is seeking compensation for the physical and emotional trauma he says he suffered. He has described himself as fortunate to be alive and hopes sharing his experience highlights the importance of aviation safety and emergency preparedness.
While dramatic in nature, aviation experts note that incidents involving severe window damage and rapid decompression remain extremely uncommon in modern commercial aviation. Aircraft are built with multiple layers of safety protections, and flight crews receive extensive training to respond to emergencies like the one experienced aboard the Ryanair flight.
