Violence Erupts in Downtown Entertainment District
A mass shooting in downtown Austin early Sunday morning left at least three people dead, including the suspected gunman, and more than a dozen others injured, according to authorities. Suspect Opened Fire From Vehicle, Police Say
The Austin Police Department said the suspected gunman initially fired from inside a large SUV toward people gathered outside a bar, identified by authorities as Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden. Investigators said the suspect then exited the vehicle and continued shooting, reportedly armed with both a handgun and a rifle. Officers confronted the suspect within moments. According to police, at least three officers discharged their weapons during the exchange, fatally shooting the gunman at the scene. Fourteen others were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical. Officials said several victims remained in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon. Authorities have not released the identities of those killed or injured, citing the need to notify family members.
