Once an All-Pro Running Back… Now He Can’t Stay Out of Trouble
Le’Veon Bell’s football career once made him one of the NFL’s most electrifying running backs, but his life after the league has become increasingly overshadowed by legal troubles. The former Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro was arrested in Canton, Ohio, on July 19th after authorities executed a Michigan warrant related to unpaid child support. Bell had just finished an autograph signing at Belden Village Mall when Jackson Township police took him into custody.
According to reports, the warrant stems from allegations that Bell owes more than $50,000 in child support, although his attorney argues the amount is based on Bell’s former NFL salary rather than his current income. His lawyer also stated that Bell previously used a portion of his NFL pension to make a $50,000 child support payment and maintains that the court has failed to adjust his obligations to reflect his post-football earnings.
Legal Issues From the Past
The arrest marks another chapter in a series of legal issues that have followed Bell throughout and after his football career. In 2014, shortly after becoming one of the NFL’s rising stars, Bell and then-Steelers teammate LeGarrette Blount were arrested after police discovered approximately 20 grams of marijuana during a traffic stop. Bell ultimately pleaded guilty to DUI and marijuana possession-related charges, receiving probation, a suspended driver’s license, court costs, and mandatory education classes.
Much more serious allegations surfaced years later. In 2025, an Ohio jury ordered Bell to pay approximately $25 million in damages after he failed to respond to a civil lawsuit accusing him of sexually abusing a female relative while she was a minor. Because Bell did not appear to defend himself, the court entered a default judgment against him. Bell has publicly denied the allegations, but the judgment remains one of the largest legal setbacks of his life.
Le’Veon Bell Was Once One of the Best in the NFL
Despite the off-field controversies, Bell’s accomplishments on the football field are undeniable. After starring at Michigan State University, the Steelers selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Bell quickly established himself as one of the league’s most complete running backs thanks to his unique, patient running style, elite receiving ability, and pass-blocking skills. Between 2014 and 2017, he earned three Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro honors while becoming the centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s explosive “Killer B’s” offense alongside quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and wide receiver Antonio Brown.
During his career, Bell rushed for over 6,500 yards, accumulated nearly 10,000 yards from scrimmage, and scored 51 total touchdowns. His lengthy contract dispute with the Steelers in 2018 led him to sit out an entire season before signing a lucrative deal with the New York Jets. Unfortunately, he never regained his All-Pro form, later spending brief stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before his NFL career effectively came to an end in 2021.
Bell Tried to Stay Relevant the Best He Could
Since leaving football, Bell has attempted to reinvent himself through several different ventures. He pursued professional boxing, defeating former NFL running back Adrian Peterson in an exhibition match before compiling a 2-1 professional boxing record and participating in Misfits Boxing events. Bell has also remained active on social media, appeared on reality television including The Masked Singer, attended sports memorabilia and autograph conventions, and occasionally hinted at an NFL comeback that never materialized. He also publicly endorsed Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential election and has remained outspoken on a variety of issues online.
