Rap Superstar Doubles Down on MAGA after Glowing Compliment
By Joshua Weiss | October 29, 2026
Donald Trump has never been accused of being the most subtle man in American politics. But during a recent Michigan campaign rally, the president managed to turn a political appearance featuring one of rap music’s biggest superstars into a conversation about her backside.
One thing for sure. Like him or hate him, Trump does not mix words. He has had a history of saying what he thinks with no filter, and it continues to this very day. Right up to his latest rally in Michigan where he claimed.
“By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before, Nicki Minaj,” Trump told the crowd, prompting laughter and cheers. “That’s hard to miss.”
The president was referring to Nicki Minaj, the Grammy nominated rapper who has increasingly become one of the most unexpected celebrity supporters of his administration. Minaj was present at the rally, and Trump called attention to her, asking her to stand up as the audience reacted.
The October 25th appearance in Port Huron, Michigan, was supposed to be about Republican candidates and the approaching midterm elections. Instead, the combination of Trump’s unfiltered commentary and Minaj’s growing involvement in Republican politics provided another reminder that American political campaigns have become part policy debate, part celebrity spectacle, and part reality television. And in Trump’s world, apparently, no subject is necessarily off-limits, even when the subject happens to be standing in the audience.
What Happened at the Michigan Rally?
The event took place at McMorran Place Sports and Entertainment Center in Port Huron. Trump was campaigning for Republican candidates Mike Rogers, who is running for the U.S. Senate, and John James, who is running for Michigan governor. Minaj traveled to Michigan aboard Air Force One with the president before appearing at the event. Her presence was a significant attraction, given her international fame and her increasingly public support for the administration.
During his remarks, Trump was discussing the physique of Ohio Republican Sen. Jon Husted, continuing a running joke about the senator’s physical build. He then shifted the conversation toward Minaj.
“I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki. She’s been with us for a long time,” Trump said, according to reporting on the event.
Minaj appeared amused by the attention, and the crowd responded with laughter and cheers. She later took the stage and delivered a much more serious message about her political allegiance.
“President Trump, it is an honor to stand with you every single time,” she told the president. “And I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I will support you again.”
There is one constitutional detail worth mentioning: Trump is serving his second elected presidential term and cannot be elected to a third under the 22nd Amendment. Minaj’s pledge was a show of loyalty, not a realistic prediction of another Trump presidential campaign. She also praised what she described as a change in the country’s direction under his leadership and encouraged voters to support Republican candidates. For a rally intended to energize Republican voters before the midterms, the appearance offered something political strategists increasingly value: a celebrity with a massive audience who can attract attention well beyond traditional campaign coverage.
Who Is Nicki Minaj? A Look at Her Rap Career
Before becoming a prominent Trump supporter, Minaj had already established herself as one of the most recognizable female rappers of her generation. Born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8th, 1982, in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, she moved to Queens, New York, as a child. Her rise came through a combination of mixtapes, internet exposure, distinctive delivery, colorful alter egos, and an ability to move between aggressive hip hop and mainstream pop.

Her breakthrough arrived in the late 2000s, when her mixtapes attracted industry attention and helped her secure a deal with Young Money Entertainment, the label associated with Lil Wayne. Her debut studio album, Pink Friday, arrived in 2010 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album helped establish her as a mainstream force, producing hits including “Super Bass” and “Moment 4 Life,” featuring Drake. Minaj subsequently became a fixture on radio, award shows, and the charts, collaborating with artists across hip hop and pop.
Her biggest career milestones include:
2010: Pink Friday. Her debut album established her as a major commercial force and introduced a wider audience to her distinctive blend of rap, pop, and theatrical personas.
- 2012: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. The album expanded her pop crossover, with songs such as “Starships” becoming international hits.
- 2014: The Pinkprint. A more personal project that included “Anaconda,” one of her most recognizable songs and a track that became almost as famous for its provocative video as for its music.
- 2018: Queen. The album reinforced her status as one of rap’s most commercially successful women, even as competition and disputes within hip-hop continued.
2023: Pink Friday 2. Her fifth studio album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking another major commercial achievement.
Minaj has received 12 Grammy nominations, according to the Recording Academy, although she has yet to win a competitive Grammy. Her influence extends beyond record sales. She helped establish a template for female rap stardom that combines lyrical technique, fashion, social media, a fiercely loyal fan base, and a willingness to turn public feuds into major entertainment events. That fan base, commonly known as the Barbz, has helped make her one of the most influential personalities in modern pop culture.
When Did Nicki Minaj Start Supporting Trump?
This is where the story becomes more complicated than a celebrity simply showing up at a political rally. Minaj’s relationship with Trump and Republican politics has evolved considerably over the years. She was not always a MAGA supporter, and her earlier public comments frequently differed from the positions she now promotes.
During Trump’s first presidential campaign in 2015 and 2016, Minaj occasionally acknowledged his entertainment value while criticizing aspects of his political approach. In 2018, she spoke out against the separation of immigrant children from their parents at the U.S. border, drawing on her own experience of immigrating from Trinidad and Tobago as a child.
In 2020, she again criticized Trump’s immigration policies and supported causes associated with criminal justice reform. She also made headlines in 2021 by questioning COVID-19 vaccine safety, a controversy that brought her into conflict with the Biden administration’s public-health messaging. Those episodes are important because they demonstrate that Minaj’s political evolution was not a straight line from lifelong Republican to Trump loyalist.
In October 2024, claims circulated online that she had endorsed Trump in that year’s presidential election. Fact checkers found no evidence of a public endorsement at that time. Her subsequent political alignment became much more explicit in late 2025. According to reporting by Fox News and other outlets, Minaj’s public embrace of Trump began in November 2025, when she praised his response to reports of violence and persecution targeting Christians in Nigeria. Trump had publicly addressed the situation, and Minaj thanked the president and his administration for taking the issue seriously. Her comments helped mark the beginning of a more direct public relationship with Trump’s political movement.
That initial expression of support developed into a broader endorsement of the administration and its policies. By January 2026, Minaj was appearing alongside Trump at the Treasury Department’s Trump Accounts Summit, where she described herself as the president’s “number one fan.” She has since used her public platform to defend the administration, promote its initiatives, and encourage support for Republican candidates.
Why Does Nicki Minaj Support Trump?
There is no single publicly established explanation for Minaj’s political transformation. Her own statements, however, offer several clues.
1. Religious freedom and the persecution of Christians
Her public support became more pronounced after Trump addressed violence against Christians in Nigeria. Minaj expressed gratitude for his attention to the issue and has increasingly emphasized religious freedom and the protection of Christian communities.
2. Opposition to transgender-related policies involving children
At the Michigan rally, Minaj criticized what she described as the promotion of gender-transition procedures to children. Her position aligns with the Trump administration’s opposition to gender-transition treatments for minors, a deeply contested issue in American politics.
3. Support for Trump’s agenda and personal leadership
Minaj has repeatedly praised Trump’s resilience, leadership, and the direction in which she believes he is taking the country. At the Michigan event, she described his return to office as changing the nation’s energy and providing a brighter future for Americans and their children.
4. Her growing distance from Democratic political figures
Some reporting has connected Minaj’s changing political outlook to her frustration with California Governor Gavin Newsom and other Democratic figures. Accounts have also pointed to her allegations that Newsom failed to respond to a request for assistance following a SWAT raid at her Los Angeles home. The details and the precise role that episode played in her political shift should not be treated as independently established fact.
There have also been reports of political intermediaries helping introduce Minaj to Trump’s circle before his 2024 election victory. That suggests her eventual alignment involved political networking as well as personal views. It is important to distinguish between what Minaj has explicitly said and what commentators infer from her actions. Her public statements establish that she supports Trump; they do not conclusively establish every private motivation behind that decision.
From Rap Royalty to a MAGA Celebrity
Minaj’s political involvement also raises a question about celebrity influence. For decades, major entertainers have used their fame to support political candidates. Some have backed Democrats, others Republicans, and many have avoided taking explicit positions because doing so risks alienating portions of their audiences. Minaj’s case is particularly interesting because her career was built around a fan base that includes people with widely different political views. Her earlier advocacy on immigration and LGBTQ related issues made her a difficult fit for conventional partisan labels.
Her increasingly public support for Trump demonstrates that celebrity politics can change quickly, and that an entertainer’s personal brand does not necessarily fit neatly into the political categories assigned to them by fans or critics. The Trump administration also benefits from the arrangement. Minaj brings enormous name recognition, a global audience, and an ability to attract media attention that conventional political speeches often struggle to generate.
Her appearance at the Michigan rally offered a particularly visible example of that dynamic. Trump received a celebrity endorsement, Minaj received a national political platform, and the resulting headlines reached audiences who might otherwise have paid little attention to the campaign. Whether that attention translates into votes is a different question.
The Bottom Line: A Political Rally, a Celebrity Endorsement and an Unfiltered Trump Moment
Trump’s remark about Minaj’s backside was crude, certainly, but it was also consistent with the president’s long established tendency to mix political messaging with personal commentary and humor. The more consequential development was Minaj’s declaration of unwavering support for Trump and her willingness to appear alongside him during a competitive election season.
Her transformation from a politically unpredictable rap superstar into an outspoken Trump supporter is a story worth examining on its own merits. It involves immigration, religion, public health controversies, cultural disputes, celebrity influence, and the increasingly blurred boundary between entertainment and politics. The president’s comment may have generated the headline, but Minaj’s political evolution is the bigger story. And for a campaign trying to capture attention in the final stretch before the 2026 midterms, the combination of a global rap star and an unscripted Trump moment was practically guaranteed to get people talking.
