Writer Sues ‘Yellowstone’ Creator Taylor Sheridan
Writer Lauren J. Salkin has sued “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, alleging that the hit television series copied elements from a television project she had developed years before the Paramount drama premiered.
Salkin filed the lawsuit in federal court, naming Sheridan and several companies connected to “Yellowstone.” The complaint alleges that Salkin spent years developing a television project called “Sovereign Nation,” which centered on tribal politics, land disputes, casino interests, economic power and conflicts involving development.
According to the lawsuit, Salkin submitted materials connected to “Sovereign Nation” to representatives associated with Sheridan in 2016 and 2017. She alleges that those materials included a pilot script and other development documents describing the proposed series.
Salkin claims that “Yellowstone” was subsequently developed and premiered in 2018, and that the series contains similarities to her earlier project. Her lawsuit argues that the similarities go beyond broad themes and include specific elements involving characters, storylines and the way the show’s conflicts are structured.
The complaint also points to actors who were allegedly considered for Salkin’s project and later appeared in “Yellowstone.” Salkin argues that these and other similarities support her claim that material from her project was improperly used.
The lawsuit seeks damages and other relief. Salkin is also asking the court to prevent further alleged infringement and has requested a jury trial.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Filing a lawsuit does not establish that Sheridan or any of the other defendants committed copyright infringement.
The case could ultimately turn on a key issue in copyright law: whether the similarities involve protectable creative expression or simply ideas and themes that cannot be protected. Television projects frequently involve overlapping concepts, particularly in genres built around familiar subjects such as family conflict, land ownership and political power.
“Yellowstone,” starring Kevin Costner during the show’s earlier seasons, became a major television success after its 2018 debut. Sheridan went on to expand the franchise with additional series, including “1883” and “1923.”
The lawsuit now places renewed attention on the origins of one of television’s most successful modern Western franchises. As the case moves forward, evidence concerning Salkin’s original materials, who had access to them and the development history of “Yellowstone” could become central to determining whether her claims have legal merit.
