President Donald Trump was secretly moved through an airport catering truck in Turkey before boarding a smaller military aircraft, according to a Washington Post report detailing an extraordinary security operation prompted by an alleged Iranian assassination threat.
The incident occurred July 8 following a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. According to the report, U.S. officials had received intelligence indicating that Trump and the aircraft carrying him could be targeted, including by an attack involving shoulder-fired missiles. The threat reportedly prompted the Secret Service to devise a deception operation designed to conceal Trump’s actual location.
Trump Was Secretly Moved Off Air Force One
Trump had arrived in Turkey aboard the Boeing 747-8 that Qatar had provided to the United States and which was being prepared for potential use as Air Force One. But when it came time to leave, the president’s security team decided he should not travel on that aircraft.
Instead, Trump publicly appeared to board an older Air Force One aircraft while cameras recorded his departure. Behind the scenes, however, the president was reportedly taken off the aircraft and transported to a smaller Air Force C-32A military jet.
The Washington Post reported that Trump was moved from the presidential aircraft using an airport catering truck equipped with a lift. The unusual vehicle allowed the president and a small group of aides to travel from one aircraft to another without revealing the switch to reporters or other personnel who believed Trump was still aboard Air Force One.
Air Force One Became a Decoy
The operation effectively turned the older Air Force One into a decoy.
Reporters traveling with the presidential delegation were reportedly unaware that Trump had left the aircraft. Some White House personnel also believed the president remained aboard.
The aircraft then departed as if Trump were still traveling on it, while Trump flew separately on the military C-32A. The operation was not publicly disclosed at the time.
The Washington Post reported that several close Trump aides accompanied him during the covert transfer, while senior Cabinet officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio remained associated with the decoy operation.

He has also argued that the smaller military aircraft he ultimately boarded may actually have faced greater risks than the Air Force One aircraft he had left behind. Reports published Wednesday said Trump described the military jet as being at greater risk during the operation.
